Tips for healthy shoreland practices

Based on information from Resources for Health Shorelands in Marathon County produced by Marathon County Conservation, Planning and Zoning Department, UW-Extension Lakes and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

Mow less: reduce mowing and native vegetation will re-establish itself

Plant native vegetation: plant native species of grasses/flowers, shrubs and trees—easy to maintain

Add a rain garden or rain barrel: these will reduce run-off water pollutants into the lake

Reduce the use of fertilizer: test your soil to see what is actually necessary for healthy plants

Add or leave woody habitat: add or leave fallen trees and shrubs near the shore and in the water for added habitat for the turtles, birds, and fish

Ask for help: contact your county specialists or consultants
